Sam the Kid is widely regarded as one of the most prominent rappers and producers in Portugal, and one of the “most historic participants and drivers” of the genre in the country. After leaving school aged 15, he set up his first group “Official Nasty” with school friends Daddy-O-Pop, 2 Much and Sheriff. His debut album “Entre(tanto” released in 1999 is regarded as a milestone in Portuguese hip-hop culture. His music is noted for a creative and extensive use of sampling, with the MPC as his primary production equipment. His second album “Sobre(tudo)” (2001) attracted the attention of then recently created Loop Recordings, which offered him a contract. It was in 2002, with the release of his third album, an instrumental record titled “Beats Vol. 1: Amor”, that Sam the Kid began to enjoy a significant level of success. The album was considered by fans and critics to be one of the greatest Portuguese releases of the year. The album featured the song “Não Percebes” that became one of the biggest Portuguese rap hits, which touched on the issue of the “us vs. them” mentality in the genre. In 2006, the artist released “Pratica(mente)”, an album praised by critics as one of the most ambitious of the genre made in the country, a record that is still well remembered by fans. In 2008, he was nominated for the second time for the MTV Europe Music Awards. The artist has been noted for taking a “radically open and eclectic” approach in his efforts to expand his audience, as well as for refusing to sing in English. Sam started a new project named TV Chelas, a YouTube platform focusing on Portuguese hip-hop. Besides having worked closely as either a musician or producer with a long list of names like Mundo Segundo, Chullage, Boss AC, Valete, GROGNation, DJ Cruzfader, Classe Crua, Ace, Bob Da Rage Sense, Mind the Gap, MadVision, Snake, GQ, Sir Scratch, NBC, Pacman, Regula, Melo D, Dealema, Tekilla, or DJ Bomberjack, among many others, he is also a founding member of seminal Portuguese band Orelha Negra.
